Investing in Jiangsu Province

Realised in monetary terms foreign investment in Jiangsu Province in 2005 totalled US$ 13.18 billion, this is a dramatic increase of 29.2% on the total foreign investment from 2004. The total value of imports and exports increased to US$ 227.941 in 2005, this is a 33.4% increase compared to the previous year. Of this amount US$ 122.982 million belonged to exports, this was a significant increase of 40.5% on 2004.

In 2005 all the major industry sectors received increased revenue in 2005 compared to the previous year. Turnover from sales in the retail sector in 2005 reached 569.99 billion RMB, this is an increase of 16% on 2004. Annual turnover of postal service operations were 5.295 billion RMB, and increase of 13.4%. Revenues from domestic and foreign tourism were up 26% and 28.1% respectively. The total added value of the construction industry in Jiangsu Province was 101.6 billion RMB, an increase of 10.7% on 2004. In the agricultural sector the province’s grain output increased by 55,000 tonnes between 2004 and 2005 to a total output of 28,346 million tonnes. Total output of the high-tech industries was up 34.4% in 2005 compared to the previous year, bringing the total value of output to 792.817 billion RMB.

By the end of 2005 45.101 million people in Jiangsu Province were in employment. This is an increase of 276,000 compared to the previous year. In the same year a total of 415,000 workers who had been made redundant found new work. At the end of 2005 the welfare units in Jiangsu Province were equipped with over 90,000 beds and accommodated approximately 73,000 homeless people. A large proportion of rural and urban residents, approximately 1.286 million people, received a basic living allowance from the government by the end of 2005.
