Investing in Yunnan Province

Realised into monetary terms the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for Yunnan Province in 2005 stood at US$ 189 million, this is an increase of 34.1% on the previous year. Over 2005 companies in Yunnan province were contracted with 132 projects from abroad worth an estimated US$530 million; this is a dramatic 69.0% increase on the value of foreign contracts from 2004.

All the major industry sectors in Yunnan Province saw growth and development in 2005, however, not to the same extent as many of the central and eastern provinces. Revenue for tourism in 2005 totalled 43.014 billion RMB, an increase of 16.5% on the previous year. The annual turnover from retail sales reached 103.44 billion RMB, compared to the turnover from 2004 this was an increase of 13%. In agriculture the province’s grain output increased by only 0.4% between 2004 and 2005 to 15.149 million tonnes. The added value of the construction industry in 2005 was 24.964 billion RMB, this was an increase of 12.5%. The annual turnover of postal operations in Yunnan Province was approximately 856 million RMB, an increase of 4.6% on 2004. The heavy industry sector also did not increase in added value to the same extent as some of the more successful provinces in China. The total added value for 2005 was 120.007 billion RMB, and increase of 7.7% on the previous year.  

At the end of 2005 the employed population of Yunnan Province was approximately 24.5 million people. This was an increase of 486,000 people on the previous year. In the same year a total of 107,100 workers who were previously laid off found new employment. In 2005 a serious effort was made in Yunnan Province to reduce the number of people living in poverty. 2005 saw a reduction of 139,000 people who were living on a per capita income of less than 683 RMB.
