Sakya was the capital of Tibet in the 13th century. The town is dominated by Sakya's southern monastery, whose thick walls and watchtowers make it look more like a fortress than a monastery. Inside are the Puntsok Palace, the Purkhang, and an assembly hall said to have been a gift from Kublai Khan.
