Getting to Qingdao

Updated 12 September 2026

Arrival

As of August 2021, Qingdao Liuting International Airport was replaced by the new Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO), located about 48km northwest of the city center. Buses run hourly into the city center for around 15 yuan; a taxi costs 60–80 yuan.

The city's German-built railway station sits centrally near the Zhan Bridge, with connections to many cities — thanks to high-speed rail, Beijing is now about 3.5-5 hours away and Shanghai about 5-6.5 hours, both far faster than the old conventional-train times.

Getting around

City buses are the main form of local transport in Qingdao. Unlike Beijing, bicycles are relatively rare on the streets, since the city is quite hilly. Taxis cost 7 yuan for the first 4km and 1.8 yuan for each additional kilometer — it's worth having your destination written down in Chinese, as not all drivers can read a city map.
