Softball (women only) has been an Olympic sport since Atlanta 1996, but Beijing 2008 will be its last appearance before being dropped from the program starting with London 2012.
At Beijing 2008, softball runs from August 12–21 at the Fengtai Softball Field.
China's women have won one Olympic medal in the sport to date: silver in Atlanta 1996 (Wang Ying, Wei Qiang, Xu Jian, Yan Fang, Zhang Chunfang).
Don Porter, president of the International Softball Federation, said in an interview that he expects the Chinese women to win gold in softball in 2008, citing both their playing strength and home-field advantage (source: Xinhua).
