Equestrian sport has been part of the Olympics since 1900, when the first events were held in Paris. After two gaps, it has been a regular fixture since 1912.
At Beijing 2008, equestrian events run from August 9–20 at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Given Hong Kong's strong equestrian tradition, it makes for a fitting host — the two racecourses, Sha Tin and Sheung Shui, sit just outside the city in scenic surroundings and hold around 18,000 spectators.
Chinese athletes have not yet won an Olympic medal in equestrian sport.
