The Octopus card is a convenient payment method for any visit to Hong Kong, however short. It's available at the information counter at the airport, and getting one is well worth it. It can be used for buses, the MTR, ferries, and admission to tourist attractions, as well as for cashless payment at shops and fast-food restaurants. Launched in September 1997 originally for public transport, its uses have expanded steadily, making it close to essential for a Hong Kong visit.
The card can be topped up at machines or counters at any MTR station, using HK$100 or HK$50 notes. If your balance runs short, the card allows an overdraft of up to HK$35, deducted at the next top-up.
The Airport Express Tourist Octopus Card costs HK$220–300, of which HK$50 is a refundable deposit returned when you hand the card back. Personalized Octopus cards are also available, along with an Automatic Add Value Service that tops up the card automatically once the balance runs low.
