A typical souvenir from home makes a good gift for friends. If you're invited somewhere on short notice, a bottle of wine is a safe choice — a sweeter wine tends to be preferred. A fruit basket also goes down well. A few things to avoid: flowers, which are associated with mourning, and white wrapping paper — red paper (a symbol of luck) is the better choice.
