Using Chopsticks in China

Updated 12 September 2026

Meals in China are normally eaten with chopsticks, though some restaurants will bring cutlery on request. Contrary to popular belief, eating with chopsticks isn't hard to learn. There are two common grips.

Hold one chopstick between thumb and index finger (similar to holding a pen); rest the other on your bent middle finger and secure it with the base of your thumb.

The second method is similar, except the second chopstick is held with the middle and ring fingers instead.

Holding both chopsticks as parallel as possible, gripped near the back end, is considered elegant.

Eating rice with chopsticks is also no problem, since Chinese rice is quite sticky.
