Updated 12 September 2026

Wong Kar-wai's film 2046 (director of Chungking Express) brought together a remarkable cast: Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; Rush Hour 2), Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love, Infernal Affairs, Chungking Express), Gong Li (Farewell My Concubine, The Emperor and the Assassin), Maggie Cheung (Hero), and Faye Wong (Chungking Express).

Synopsis

Hong Kong, 1966: the writer Chow is working on a science-fiction novel in his hotel room. The further he pushes his fictional, futuristic love story forward, the deeper he sinks into memories of his own past romances. Three women who mattered to him reappear in his mind's eye, each having left an indelible mark on him — but it's the thought of his one true, unfulfilled love that haunts him most. In his head, a shimmering, mysterious procession of images unfolds: a pull of beautiful and sorrowful feelings, secret longings and wild passions, until it becomes clear that imagination and wistful memory are inseparably intertwined.

Wong Kar-wai on the film

"We all need a place where we can keep — or even hide — certain memories, thoughts, impulses, hopes and dreams. They're part of our lives; we can't resolve them and can't actively influence them, yet we're afraid to let them go. For some people that place is physically real; for others, a mental space; for a smaller number, neither one nor the other. '2046' is a project I began a long time ago. The road to finishing it was eventful, and it took a long time to complete. Now it's just as hard to let go of as it is to say goodbye to memories one holds dear."
