Olympics 2008: Badminton in China

Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992, and China’s badminton players have been very successful at the games, achieving numerous gold medals.
China achieved its first gold medal in women’s doubles in 1996 (Ge Fei und Ge Jun). Just four years later they won four more gold medals; Zhang  Jun and Gao Ling for women’s/men’s mix, Ge Fei and Gu Jun for women’s doubles, Gong Zhichao in women’s singles and Ji Xinpeng for men’s singles. These four gold medals were achieved from only five Badminton matches. In 2004, China took three gold medals.

China’s prospects for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing are promising, although the Chinese Badminton Association has rather modest expectations according to an official announcement. It expects to secure only two gold medals in the men’s, although it does anticipates stiff competition for the other three medals it believes China has a good chance of success..
